Education & License

Dr. Aaron T. Barnes is a licensed clinical psychologist in Arizona and currently serves as the Director of Counseling & Psych Services (CAPS) at the University of Arizona. He earned his B.A. in Psychology, and both his M.A. and Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Systems Psychology from Azusa Pacific University.

Role at CAPS

Aaron is the director at CAPS. He played a key role in establishing the University of Arizona Crisis Mobile Team, serves on the university’s Threat Assessment and Management Team (TAMT), and has led efforts to expand CAPS’ outreach, training initiatives, and site-based counseling services across campus.

Professional Interests

Dr. Barnes has held a variety of leadership roles in university counseling centers, with a focus on public health, outreach, and LGBTQPIA+ programming. He is passionate about mentoring students and developing future leaders in mental health care. Clinically, his work centers on identity development, substance use recovery, crisis intervention, and LGBTQPIA+ support, drawing from Relational-Cultural Theory and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

Personal Interests

Hiking, weightlifting, camping, traveling, music and theatre, and spending time with his dog, Dunder.
