Mariel earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications with a major in Journalism and a Master of Arts in Education with an emphasis in Guidance and Counseling and a Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Counseling from the Universidad Central de Bayamon in Puerto Rico. Mariel has worked as a professional counselor for over 20 years, providing academic, individual, and career counseling to undergraduate and graduate college students, and has over 10 years as an adjunct professor offering courses, especially to first-year students.
